During the strange and uncertain times that descended upon us in 2020 and the subsequent shift to working from home, a client contacted me about the possibility of converting her garden shed into an additional home office.
The shed was located at the bottom of her garden that borders beautiful Cypress Mountain and is surrounded by trees and everything green. The perfect place to escape her busy home where both her office space, and quiet space, was now shared with her family.
On closer inspection, we discovered that there was some water damage in the corner of the shed. This could be repaired and the cause addressed by diverting the downspouts. Other than that the shed had a good roof and was structurally sound. However, the door and window would need to be changed and we definitely needed to address the insulation - it was chilly in there!
With the impact of Covid on material supply and the long lead times, my usual source for doors and windows couldn’t help me this time. After some online searching, I drove a little ways out of town where I discovered a very helpful supplier who had stocked vinyl windows and fibreglass french doors. With some small alterations to the openings we could make them work - and the supplier kindly popped in the glass to the frames before they helped load the doors into my truck the same day.
With the doors and windows installed, wiring roughed in for both a new light fixture and power outlets, and then the insulation installed, the project was well underway. Next came the real transformation.
I chose wide panelling for the walls both to increase the sense of space - and to add some office elegance. The narrower boards on the ceiling added subtle texture and the new beam added architectural detail while also serving as a base for the light box. We added simple, flat trim to frame the new window and door and then it was time to paint.
My favourite white over the past couple of years has been Benjamin Moore Oxford White because of its subtle warmth but with enough gray undertones that it remains neutral. Perfect for the cool northern exposure of the shed and the green reflection from the surrounding landscaping. As a rug would entirely cover the floor space, I opted to also paint out the new plywood flooring with a heavy duty floor paint to save on cost. The black metal pendant light fixture contrasted nicely against the white finish of the walls and ceiling.
